DePauw takes two from Chapman

DEPAUW TAKES TWO FROM CHAPMAN

ORANGE, Calif. – Freshman Elizabeth Runge hit her first career home run but the Chapman University softball team fell to DePauw on both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday. The visitors took a 2-1 pitchers' duel in the first game and slugged out a 13-4 win in the nightcap.

Game 1 – L, 2-1

Two swings of the bat accounted for all the runs scored in the game as Chapman's Samantha Whalen and DePauw's Emma Baldwin went toe-to-toe in the circle. Both pitchers only allowed runs to cross the plate on a home run but Whalen gave one up with a runner on.

That was the difference in the game as the Tigers' Ashlee Gibson hit a two-run shot to left in the second inning while Runge hit a towering solo homer to left in the third.

Baldwin allowed just four Panther hits and struck out 12 while walking two. Whalen matched her opponent in the circle, allowing only four hits, but struck out three and walked two.

Game 2 – L, 13-4

DePauw kept the momentum from a close win going into the second game as the Tigers plated four runs in the first and three more in the second to jump way out in front. Freshman Analisa Ruff was able to shut down the second inning rally and hold the Tigers scoreless in the third and fourth.

The Panthers chipped their way back in the game as Amber Perez singled in a run in third while Lisa Perez's triple to left field sparked a three-run rally in the fourth to cut the lead to 7-4. Ruff followed Lisa Perez's triple with a double and later scored on an error. Runge later hit an RBI-double for the Panthers' fourth run.

The tides swung back to the visitors' side in the fifth as a couple of errors and back-to-back triples accounted for four more runs. A pair of unearned runs in the fifth sealed the run-rule victory for DePauw.

The Panthers aren't back in action until Apr. 1 when they will make up their rained out doubleheader at Pomona-Pitzer.
