Softball's slide continues against Cal Lutheran

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University softball team fell twice to Cal Lutheran on Friday, 8-4 and 23-5. The Panthers current skid reached seven games.

Game 1 – L, 8-4

Junior Elizabeth Runge drove in three runs and went 2-for-3 at the plate. However, a five-run fifth for Cal Lutheran proved too much to overcome.

The Panthers (14-20, 7-15 SCIAC) took the initial lead in the first when sophomore Michaela Foisy turned a deep fly ball to right into a sacrifice fly. From second base, Foisy tagged up and rounded third without hesitation to score well ahead of the throw.

The lead was short lived as Cal Lutheran (13-20, 7-15 SCIAC) scored one in the top of the second and a pair in the third to go up 3-1. Runge singled in a run in the third to make it a one-run game and close the gap to 3-2.

The Regals send the entire batting order to the plate in the fifth and took advantage of a pair of Chapman errors to plate five runs for an 8-2 lead. Runge doubled in two more in the sixth to cut the deficit down to 8-4 but the Panters were unable to get any closer.

Game 2- L, 23-5

Cal Lutheran scored in bunches over the first four innings, taking full advantage of five Chapman errors, to get the run-rul victory and complete the sweep. Foisy went 2-for-2 at the plate.

The Regals put 11 runs on the board over the first two innings before Chapman was able to respond. Sophomore Heaven Wong doubled in a run and later scored on sophomore Samantha Tong's sacrifice fly.

Sophomore Kyra Gallego stroked a two-run single into right center after freshman Jordyn Krohn brought home a run earlier in the third inning.

However, the Regals continued to roll at the plate. They scored three more in the third and hung up nine runs in the fourth.

Sophomore Sarah Hartmann and freshman Erin Coogan each had their first career hit.

The Panthers will look to snap their losing skid tomorrow when they head to Occidental for a noon doubleheader. They return home on Friday at 2 p.m. to take on Redlands and will honor their seniors prior to the game.
