ORANGE, Calif. — The Panthers dropped both legs of Saturday, April 22's doubleheader to the Claremont-M-S Athenas, losing the first game 7-4 then falling in game two 3-1.
Game 1 - L, 7-4
Scoring was hard to come by for the first few innings as both teams broke through in the third inning, heading into the fourth tied at one.
In the bottom of the fourth a costly error helped Gracie Rose's sacrifice bunt turn into a little league homer. The throw from the third baseman to second soared into center field and all the way to the wall bringing pinch runner Katie Carder and Rose all the way around.
The Athenas answered right back, however, putting up a six spot in the fifth, sealing the victory.
Game 2 - L, 3-1
It was the stellar base running from the Athenas that was the difference in this one. On back-to-back plays, the Athenas reached on infield singles, but with a runner on second, the batter got in a run down between first and second allowing the runners to score each time.
The Panthers would be shut out until the seventh when they scraped a run across on a Mo Lynch single, but Rose grounded into a fielder's choice to end the game.
Only two of the runs the Panthers allowed on the day were earned.
With the sweep, the Panthers now drop into second place in the SCIAC at 10-5 and will take on Whittier next weekend in hopes to regain that top seed.
