Murphy walks it off, Malen one over the minimum in senior day win
ORANGE, Calif. — It was a Miranda Murphy single that sent Chapman fans home happy; a 2-1 win over the Whittier Poets on senior day capped off a successful Saturday at the yard for the Panthers.
The Panthers had runners in scoring position in four out of the game's seven innings, but couldn't capitalize until Murphy bounced a single through the right side bringing home Grace Fosselman and Shea Higa.
The table was set in the inning with Fosselman reaching on a lead-off walk. Gracie Rose bunted her over to second, then Ella Milante followed with a single, her second hit of the day. Higa pinch ran for Milante, swiped second, and left the rest in the hands of Murphy.
Chapman wouldn't have gotten the win without a spectacular start from Rose Malen in the circle. She was nearly perfect, her only blemish a hit, with that runner eventually scoring on a sacrifice fly following an error.
The Panthers standout freshman struck out 12 Poets, walked none, and allowed no earned runs.
A huge victory, the Panthers are now two games up on Whittier and with Redlands and Claremont-M-S splitting, sit at first in the SCIAC at 11-5. The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow on the road in Whittier at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
