Women's basketball back in top-25 for team GPA

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women’s basketball team is once again ranked among the brightest teams in the nation according to the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association annual poll. The Panthers’ team grade-point average of 3.40 earned them the No. 23 ranking in NCAA Division III for the 2009-10 school year.

This is the second year in a row Chapman has earned a top-25 ranking from the WBCA in team GPA. The University of Redlands (which ranked third on the list) was the only other California school in Division III to crack the top-25.

Three of Chapman’s top-five scorers on last year’s squad also had GPAs of 3.6 or higher including leading scorer junior G Simone Ibbotson (13.4 ppg) who has a cumulative GPA of 3.82. Meanwhile, sophomore G Mary Petrie (9.1 ppg, 3.68 GPA) and junior G Tara Glennon (8.2 ppg, 3.65 GPA) both came in over 3.6. Junior G Christina Ly (3.82) and freshman C Kendall Byrer (3.82) also led the team in GPA.

The Panthers were 14-11 on the court in 2009-10, including winning seven of their final nine games. It marked the 16th straight winning season for the Chapman women.

GPAs are calculated by dividing the total number of quality points earned by each student-athlete on an institution's roster in the given academic terms by the total number of hours earned by the team. The GPAs are rounded to the nearest thousandth of a point.
