Johns Hopkins sneaks past Chapman 69-65 in overtime

ORANGE, Calif. – In the second half, the Chapman University women's basketball team led by as many as seven points, only to see its lead disappear as Johns Hopkins University rallied to pull out a 69-65 overtime win on Wednesday night at the Hutton Sports Center. The loss is Chapman's first of the season at home. Chapman last played an overtime game against Redlands last season, winning 77-69.

Near the end of regulation with 1:36 remaining, Chapman (10-5) led 59-55 after a basket by sophomore G Kimi Takaoka. Chapman turned the ball over on its next two possessions which allowed Johns Hopkins senior G Chantel Mattiola to tie the game with four-consecutive free throws. Mattiola had a team-high 16 points, including 6-of-6 shooting from the free-throw line to go along with four assists.

After Takaoka turned the ball over with five seconds remaining and committed a foul, Johns Hopkins (9-1) had a chance to win the game in regulation, but sophomore G Fatu Conteh missed both free throws, sending the game into overtime all tied at 65. Conteh added 14 points for Johns Hopkins while Takaoka had a team-high 18 points, but struggled shooting, going just 6-of-21 from the field.

In overtime, Chapman senior C Brandi Hood gave the team a brief lead at 61-59, but Johns Hopkins answered right back with a basket  by junior F Alex Vassila. With the score tied for the 15th and final time at 65-65 with 2:01 remaining in overtime, freshman F Haley Bush gave Johns Hopkins the lead for good with 45 seconds remaining. Johns Hopkins then sealed its 69-65 win with a pair of free throws by senior G Stephanie Fong.

Chapman connected on 45 percent of its field goals in the first half but made just 28 percent in the second half and overtime. The opposite was true for Johns Hopkins as they started cold with 31 percent shooting but had a strong second half shooting 50 percent.

Hood had a double-double for Chapman with 13 points and 11 rebounds while junior G Emily McCoy added 11 points.
