Pair of Panthers earn All SCIAC Honors
ORANGE, Calif. – The third place Chapman University women's basketball team was well-represented when the All-SCIAC teams were announced Thursday. Senior PG Andrea Villanueva and sophomore G Lauren Sato earned First Team SCIAC All-Conference Women's Basketball Honors.
Two-time honoree Villanueva led the Panthers with 331 points and 12.7 points per game this season. The senior guard ranked second in the conference with 3.9 assists per game and sixth in assists per turnover (1.4). She was also a threat on the defensive end of the court as well, tallying 1.8 steals per game.
Villaneuva was only the third woman in CU Division III history to reach 300 points and 100 assists in the same season, joining Lauren Kamiyama (2006-07) and Melissa Bynon (2000-01, 2001-02). The guard also reached the 1,000 point milestone in February against SCIAC rival University of La Verne.
Returning strong after missing the 2013-14 season due to an injury, Sato earned First Team honors ranking second on the team with points per game (8.4) and steals per game (1.4). Sato shot an impressive 83.3 percent from the line this season and recorded a career-high of 18 points against Pomona-Pitzer on Jan. 31. The sophomore had a career best season of 219 points and 47 assists.
The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference was established in 1915. The league is currently comprised of nine private colleges and universities in Southern California: California Institute of Technology, California Lutheran University, Chapman University, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, University of La Verne, Occidental College, Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, University of Redlands, and Whittier College. The conference recognizes outstanding athletic achievements of its student-athletes on a weekly and annual basis.
