Slugs slip from Chapman

ORANGE, Calif. –  The Chapman University women's basketball team fell 64-58 to UC Santa Cruz at the Hutton Sports Center on Thursday night. Sophomore Jaryn Fajardo led the Panthers with 12 points and five boards.

Tied 4-4 at the 6:24 minute mark, the Slugs went on a 9-2 run to edge the Panthers 13-6 with just two minutes left in the first period. Chapman responded with a 7-2 run of their own to end the first period 15-13.

Senior Lauren Sato drove down low to tie the game 15-15 in the start of the second. The Panthers carried that momentum through the next four minutes to pick up a 23-19 lead.

Trailing 23-19, the Slugs climbed their way back with a 9-2 run led by Jasmin Dimson who helped the Slugs take the lead 28-25 at the end of the second half with four points from the line.

Trailing 38-31, Chapman responded with an 8-4 run to push the match to 39-42. Senior Jaime Hum-Nishikado hit a triple with 2:09 in the match to tie the Panthers and Slugs 42-42. But UC Santa Cruz finished out the game edging Chapman 17-14 in the fourth quarter despite six lead changes.

Dimson led the Slugs with 21 points, while Jenna Sparks dominated the boards with 19. The Slugs out-rebounded Chapman 48-32.

Chapman will travel to Hawaii for the Hoops in Hawaii Holiday Classic. The Panthers will play North Central (Ill.) on Monday, Dec. 19 and Wis. Lutheran on Tuesday, Dec. 20. The Panthers will return home to the Hutton Center on Wednesday, Dec. 28 for a 4 pm match against Amherst College.
