Chapman closes out 2016 with narrow victory

ORANGE, Calif. – Trailing 60-58 senior Megan Charles draws a foul from behind the arc and sinks three free throws lifting the Chapman University women's basketball to a 61-60 win over Oneonta State at the Hutton Sports Center on Friday night.

Chapman held the lead up until the last four minutes of the game when the Red Dragons responded from a 13-point deficit at the half to tie the match up 54-54 in the fourth period. Oneonta and Chapman moved the score to 58-58 over the next three minutes and Oneonta picked up the lead for the first time in the game with a layup from Leanne Coroso to grab the 60-58 lead with less than 30 seconds on the clock.

Charles crucial foul and free throws with less than a full second on the clock came in clutch helping the Panthers clinch the narrow victory. Charles also contributed 13 points to help Chapman earn its final win of 2016.  

Junior Jaime Hum-Nishikado hit five triples behind the arc in the first half to carry the Chapman women's basketball to the 37-23 lead at the end of the first half. Sophomore Jaryn Fajardo contributed an 11 additional points while sophomore Katelyn Serizawa recorded four steals throughout the game.

The Panthers took their largest lead of the match, 15 points in the second period, with just two minutes left in the half. Chapman out-scored the Red Dragons 21-9 in period two.

The Panthers will return to the Hutton Sports Center for a SCIAC match against La Verne on Wednesday, Jan. 4 at 7 pm.
