Women's basketball completes season sweep of Cal Lutheran with 70-58 win

ORANGE, Calif. – A fast start stood up as the Chapman University women's basketball team completed a season sweep of Cal Lutheran with a 70-58 win over the Regals. Senior Lauren Sato went off for 20 points to lead the Panthers (10-8, 7-2 SCIAC) to the win over the SCIAC leaders.

The win moves Chapman back into a three-way tie atop the SCIAC standings with Cal Lutheran and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps as all have just two losses.

Chapman never trailed in the contest and led by as many as 19 points late in the second half. A big first quarter gave the Panthers a 14-point lead after the first 10 minutes. Over the final 4:38 of the quarter, the Panthers went on a 12-2 run and turned a four-point lead into a 26-12 lead.

Senior Megan Charles scored seven points in the first quarter to fuel the early run with Sato and sophomore Jaryn Fajardo each pitching in five points in the opening quarter. The Panthers built up a 19-point lead in the second quarter but Cal Lutheran closed it down to just 15 points at the half.

The Regals came out hot in the third quarter, shooting 53.8 percent in the quarter and quickly chipping away at the lead. Haley Hodgson's bucket with 2:50 left in the third closed the gap to just four points with 2:50 to go. However, that would be as close as the Regals would get as Chapman answered to get the lead back to eight heading into the fourth quarter.

A strong defensive effort in the fourth kept Cal Lutheran from closing the gap any further and Chapman walked out with the win. Sato had 20 points to lead the Panthers while Fajardo had 12 points to go along with eight assists. The Panthers had just seven turnovers but forced 15 turnovers from the Regal.

Cal Lutheran shot just 35.7 percent and were 5-of-22 from three-point range. Janelle Porter kept the Regals in the game with 18 points off the bench while Cal Lutheran struggled to find to get into a groove from long range. The Panthers shot just over 48 percent overall and 46 percent from long range.

Chapman heads out on the road next week to face Redlands on Wednesday and La Verne on Saturday.
