Women's basketball finishes season with win over Whittier

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's basketball team closed out the 2022-23 season with a 47-39 win over visiting Whittier on Saturday. Julia Strand put the finishing touches on a brilliant career with 18 points and 17 rebounds.

Stand led the way on the comeback win for the Panthers but Sammie Inana pitched in six points on her Senior Day and Julianna Campas scored nine in her final time in a Panther uniform.

After Chapman fell behind 15-10 in the first quarter, the Panther defense locked down Whittier to spur the comeback victory. The Poets scored just eight points in each of the last three quarters to allow Chapman to surge past.

Neither team could find much of a rhythm offensively. Strand was 4-for-22 on the night but made 10-of-14 free throws, including key free throws down the stretch. The Panthers shot 20.6 percent for the game and Whittier shot just 30.2 percent from the field.

Chapman also forced 18 Poet turnovers while only committing eight on the afternoon.

Chapman finished the season with an 11-13 record and a 6-10 mark in the SCIAC, finishing sixth in the standings.
