Top seed Pomona-Pitzer eliminates women's lacrosse

CLAREMONT, Calif. – A second-half comeback attempt for the Chapman University women's lacrosse team fell short and the Panthers were eliminated from the SCIAC Championships with a 10-6 loss in the tournament semifinals to Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Saturday at the South Athletic Complex. The loss concludes the Panthers season with an overall record of 6-11 (4-8 SCIAC).

Trailing 6-0 at halftime and 7-1 two minutes into the second half, the Panthers staged a rally, scoring four straight goals to cut the lead to 7-5 with 19:35 remaining. Sophomore M Brooke Martini began the rally with her second goal of the game at 25:18 and then assisted senior A Allie Kontny three minutes later.

The teams battled scoreless over the next 10 minutes before the No. 1 seed Pomona-Pitzer (16-3 overall, 9-2 SCIAC) scored on a goal from Rebecca Long to make it 8-5. Chapman responded with a score by senior D Catherine LaPlant to cut the Sagehens' lead back to two, but that was all. Pomona-Pitzer scored the game's final two insurance goals and advanced to the finals where it will take on the winner of Monday's Redlands-Occidental contest.

Martini (two goals, assist) finished the season as Chapman's top scorer with 43 points (37 goals, six assists), narrowly edging Kontny (41 points) for the team lead. Senior GK Kara Podesta made five saves in goal in her final career game, finishing with 100 saves on the season.
