Oxy eliminates women's lacrosse from SCIAC Championships

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's lacrosse team saw its season come to an end with a 9-5 loss to host Occidental College in the semifinal match of the SCIAC Championships on Saturday night at Jack Kemp Stadium. The Tigers completed a three-game season sweep over the Panthers and earned a berth in the conference championship final against Pomona-Pitzer next Saturday.

Chapman (8-6 overall, 6-6 SCIAC) rallied from a 5-2 halftime deficit to score three consecutive goals to open the second half and tie the game at 5-5. Sophomore M Gretchen Rodenberger's second goal of the game on a free position shot knotted the score with 20:50 remaining in the game. Rodenberger also added a pair of assists in the game to lead all players with four points.

The contest remained tied for the next seven minutes until Occidental (11-5 overall, 7-4 SCIAC) broke the tie with 13:10 remaining and the Tigers scored the game's final four goals to win going away. Oxy's Sierra Slack scored a game-high three goals, including two in the final 10 minutes of the game.

Chapman sophomore GK Tara Sonnemaker faced 21 shots and saved 12 to keep the Panthers close.

This was the third season in a row the Panthers have reached at least the semifinals of the SCIAC Championship, losing last season to Pomona-Pitzer in the semifinals.
