Women's lacrosse drops opener to Pomona-Pitzer

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's lacrosse team fell 17-6 in its season-opener to Pomona-Pitzer. Senior Leah Donnelly scored four of the Panthers' six goals.

The match was tight throughout the first half with Pomona-Pitzer's biggest lead coming just four minutes in. The Sagehens scored three quick goals to go up 3-0. Sophomore Meg Hanson scored Chapman's first goal of the season to put the Panthers on the board and junior Michaela Lopez followed four minutes later to make 3-2.

After trading the next few goals, the Sagehens strung a couple together to make it 7-4 late in the first half. Donnelly scored her third goal of the night with 1:30 left to make it 7-5 at the half.

Pomona-Pitzer came out on fire in the second half, again scoring the first three goals before Donnelly found the net for a fourth time for the Panthers. However, that would be Chapman's final goal as Pomona-Pitzer ended the match on a 7-0 run.

Emily Vomvas made 12 saves in the match, including eight in the second half. In her collegiate debut, freshman Jaime Wendt made eight saves. Freshman Elise Mayer also made her Chapman debut and scooped up three draw controls.

The Panthers are back at home on Saturday to take on SCIAC-favorite Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 1 p.m.
