Career-highs for Topete, Hereu in fourth straight win

ORANGE, Calif. – A five-goal night from Vanessa Topete led the Chapman University women's lacrosse team to a 14-4 win over visiting Worcester State on Wednesday. Anna Hereu had her best match of the season, allowing just four goals and making 11 saves.

Topete scored a career-best five goals to lead Chapman offensively. She was a perfect 4-for-4 on free position opportunities.

The defenses were the story through the first quarter as both Hereu and the Lancers' Savannah Rosado made three saves in the opening 15 minutes. Topete put Chapman on the board first just over six minutes into the game but Lily Gendron responded 30 seconds later to draw the Lacer even. Topete added another free position goal just before the quarter ended to give Chapman a 2-1 lead at the first break.

The Panthers offense found a groove in the second as four Panthers combined for six goals to buil an 8-3 lead at halftime. Worcester State score the first goal of the third quarter but Chapman's defense did not allow a goal over the final 28 minutes as the offense continued to tack on goals for the win.

Hereu stopped 6-of-8 free position opportunities for the Lancers and the Panthers forced 18 turnovers despite committing 24 turnovers. Chapman also held the advantage off draw controls, 13-8. Emily Allen picked up four draw controls as well as scoring a goal and contributing two assists.

The Panthers are back home on Tuesday to take on Redlands at 4 p.m.
