Pelton gets weekly SCIAC defensive award

ORANGE, Calif. – Sophie Pelton has been selected as the SCIAC Defensive Player of the Week after helping the Chapman University women's lacrosse team to its sixth win in a row. Pelton gives the Panthers the SCIAC's weekly defensive award for the second consecutive week.

The Panthers defeated Redlands 17-8 and Willamette 19-2 last week to stay undefeated in March. Pelton caused two turnovers in the win over Redlands and another one in the blowout of Willamette.

Chapman's solid defensive effiorts in both games led to a 78-30 shot advantage last week. The Panthers' defenders, including Pelton, allowed just five free position opportunities as Chapman controlled both contests. The Panthers forced 43 turnovers and went 23-for-28 on clear attempts

With an 8.67 goals against average, the Panthers rank second in the conference. Over the last six matches, they have allowed just 22 goals and have given only 25 free-position shots – less than half the number they earned.

The Panthers are back on Wilson Field on Wednesday to take on Occidental at 7 p.m.
