Women's lacrosse extends win streak to seven

ORANGE, Calif. – The winning streak stretched to seven mates in a row as the Chapman University women's lacrosse team defeated visiting Occidental 18-11 in a SCIAC match on Wednesday. Vanessa Topete scored three times and picked up seven draw controls in the victory.

The Panthers scored eight of the first nine goals of the match and held off Occidental's late push to extend the winning streak. After opening the match with a 2-1 lead through the first three minutes, Chapman rattled off six consecutive goal to end the opening quarter and build the 8-1 lead.

Occidental chipped its way back into the match, taking advantage of five Chapman yellow cards to score five man-up goals. The Tigers cut down the lead to as little as four goals with eight minutes left to play but Chapman scored the last three goals of the match to put it away.

Topete's seven draw controls led the Panthers' 22-9 advantage off the draw in the match. Chapman's big run in the first was fueled by a 9-1 advantage on draws in the first 15 minutes. Emily Allen also picked up five draw controls.

Allen and Anna Klose each scored four goals to lead the Panthers in scoring while Allen also recorded three assists. Jessica Ricketts, Riley Murphy and Annika Carlson all contributed a pair of goals as well.

Anna Hereu made eight saves for the Panthers with five of those coming in the fourth quarter to help Chapman stop Oxy's comeback attempt.

The Tigers were led by three goals and three assists from Bella Litt.

Chapman finished its eight-match homestand through the month of March with a 7-1 record. The Panthers head out on the road to Pomona-Pitzer next Wednesday as they reach the halfway point of the SCIAC schedule. Chapman returns home on Apr. 9 to take on Whittier at 11 a.m.
