For openers, Chapman gets offensive in 3-0 win over Whitworth

ORANGE, Calif. – A well-balanced offensive attack from the Chapman University women's soccer team led to a 3-0 victory over visiting Whitworth University in both teams' 2012 season opener on Friday night at Wilson Field. The Panthers overwhelmed Whitworth with 18 shots, including 10 on goal en route to the shutout win.

Sophomore F Olivia Do scored the game-winner just 7 minutes into the match with a right-footer just past out-stretched Pirates' GK Andrea Stump and inside the far post. The goal was assisted by junior F Val Sobol who delivered the pass from the left wing.

Chapman (1-0) led 1-0 at halftime, having spent most of the first half of play in its own offensive zone and out-shooting the Pirates 10-2 in the first 45 minutes.

The Panthers' bench got into the action in the second half as sophomore F Rebeccah Bortz and freshman F Savanna Schmidt each scored goals. Just 5 minutes after subbing into the second half, Bortz jumped on a loose ball following a Chapman corner kick and found the back of the net in the 66th minute. Schmidt then sealed the win with her first career goal unassisted with under 3 minutes remaining in the match.

All of the offense was plenty of support for sophomore GK Marissa Fehrman, making her Chapman debut with a save and a shutout. The Panther defense allowed just three shots in the game.

Stump made seven saves for Whitworth (0-1) in defeat.

The win was Chapman's fifth consecutive at home after finishing the 2011 regular season with four straight victories at Wilson Field.
