Athenas rally from two-goal deficit to stun Chapman

ORANGE, Calif. –  The Chapman University women's soccer team saw its two-goal lead evaporate as visiting Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges came roaring back to defeat the Panthers 3-2 in SCIAC action on Wednesday evening at Wilson Field. The Athenas scored the tying and winning goals less than 5 minutes apart in the second half to stun the Panthers.

After opening the season with five straight wins, Chapman (6-3 overall, 2-3 SCIAC) has now lost three of its past four matches.

Senior F Madi Shove scored the game-tying goal for Claremont (5-3 overall, 4-1 SCIAC) in the 64th minute, heading a corner kick from junior M Shaundra Ullman past Chapman's freshman GK Gabrielle Cohen. The Athenas then scored the game-winner just minutes later when sophomore F Ashley Barnhill found the back of the net in the 68th minute on an indirect kick by junior D Sara Tweedy that found the heart of the goalie box.

Ullman finished with two assists in the game, having aided sophomore F Isabel Lester on the Athenas' first goal – also the result of a corner kick – in the 27th minute in the first half.

The match began promising enough for Chapman, which scored twice in the first 18 minutes to build a 2-0 advantage. Junior F Val Sobal scored her fourth goal of the year on cross from freshman M Celina Solomon in the 10th minute.

Panthers' sophomore F Rebeccah Bortz scored the second goal of the game in the 18th minute thanks to some persistency. After Sobol took a left-footed shot that was saved by Claremont's sophomore GK Molly Freed, Bortz jumped on the rebound and fired another shot which was saved by Freed. Bortz then grabbed her own rebound and finished the play with her fourth goal of the season, tying her with Sobol and sophomore M Olivia Do for the team lead.

Freed (5-3) made five saves in goal to earn the win for the Athenas. For Chapman, Cohen (0-1) suffered the loss but made three saves after entering the game in the second half.
