Complete effort lifts Chapman over Oxy 3-0

ORANGE, Calif. –  The Chapman University women's soccer team got a much-needed boost, both offensively and defensively, culminating in a 3-0 shutout victory over visiting Occidental College in SCIAC play on Wednesday night at Wilson Field.

The win snapped the Panthers' brief two-match home losing streak and marked the end of the first half of the conference schedule with Chapman currently sitting in fifth place with a record of 3-4.

Chapman (7-4 overall, 3-4 SCIAC) scored another early goal, something that has been sort of a calling card for the Panthers this season. Freshman midfielder Haley Fedden fired a shot from just inside the 18 following a corner kick from sophomore F Jordan Royer, scoring just 2:01 into the game. The goal was Fedden's second of the season and the fourth time in 11 matches Chapman has scored in the first 10 minutes.

The Panthers then added a second goal late in the first half with a shot from the right wing by sophomore F Rebeccah Bortz which gave Chapman a 2-0 lead in the 41st minute and heading into halftime. Bortz took the team lead with five goals now this season.

For good measure, freshman D Ashley Sweeting scored her first career goal on a one-timer from junior F Val Sobol in the 68th minute to make it 3-0 Panthers. The assist was Sobol's second of the game and third of the year after assisting on the Bortz goal earlier.

The offense was plenty of support for the Chapman 'D' which turned away 13 shots in all from the Tigers. Sophomore GK Marissa Fehrman made five saves to improve her record to 7-3 and earned her fifth shutout of the year. It was the Panthers' sixth shutout overall as a team.

For Occidental (2-7 overall, 1-6 SCIAC), junior GK Tayler Renshaw also faced 13 shots and earned a pair of saves in defeat.
