Four second half goals help women's soccer defeat Whittier

ORANGE, Calif. –  For the second straight game, the Chapman University women's soccer team shut out its opponent, meanwhile the Panthers' offense enjoyed its biggest output of the season in a 5-0 win over visiting Whittier College in SCIAC action at Wilson Field on Saturday. Chapman (8-4 overall, 4-4 SCIAC) has now earned back-to-back victories for the first time since it began the year 5-0.

Already leading 1-0 at halftime, Chapman exploded with four second half goals – more than the Panthers have scored in a game this year – three of which came in an 11-minute span. Chapman took a season-high 32 shots, including 12 which were on goal and another that hit the post.

Senior M Karina Cisneros got the Panthers going with her second goal of the year on a direct kick in the 13th minute of play, giving Chapman a 1-0 lead. The score would remain that way at halftime after Chapman sophomore GK Marissa Fehrman made three saves against the Whittier (4-8 overall, 2-6 SCIAC) offense.

Cisneros netted another one in the 59th minute to give the Panthers a little cushion on an assist from sophomore F Rebeccah Bortz and the flood gates opened after that.

Chapman scored three more times in just over 11 minutes beginning with Bortz's team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 69th minute. Four minutes later, freshman F Savanna Schmidt found the back of the net with a header, off a corner kick from freshman M Celina Solomon to give the Panthers a 4-0 advantage. And in the 80th minute, sophomore M Jordan Fremmerlid padded the lead with a one-timer goal off a long pass from freshman D Ashley Sweeting.

The shutout was Chapman's seventh of the year and sixth for Fehrman who improved her record to 8-3. The Panthers have never lost to Whittier since moving to Division III in 1994, a streak of 25 consecutive victories against the Poets.
