Opportunistic Redlands pulls out 1-0 win over Chapman

ORANGE, Calif. –  For much of the game, the Chapman University women's soccer team controlled the ball and had the University of Redlands' defense on its heels outshooting Redlands 24-8. Despite the advantage in shots, Chapman failed to find the net and Redlands came up with a second half goal to pull out a 1-0 win on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field. Redlands (8-3-2, 6-3-1), alone in third place in the SCIAC, has now won four matches in a row against Chapman (10-5, 5-5) dating back to 2010. Chapman holds a half game lead over Pomona-Pitzer for the fourth and final SCIAC postseason tournament spot.

The lone goal of the match came in the second half in the 74th minute on a goal by junior D Megan Marks off an assist from freshman M Savannah Laursen. Both Marks and Laursen were reserves for Redlands. On the play, Laursen beat a Chapman defender on the left wing and dropped the ball off to Marks in front of the net for the goal.

Chapman had several promising scoring opportunities in the first half, two of which came from junior F Val Sobol. In the 30th minute, Chapman's defense forced a turnover and turned the steal into a 3-on-1 breakaway, but Sobol's shot flew over the crossbar. Then in the 39th minute, Sobol put a shot off the left post. Sobol attempted a game-high eight shots.

In the second half Sobol got behind the Redlands defense again but Redlands junior GK Sabrina Grandke-Bawab came up with save. Grandke-Bawab and senior GK Linzey Smith combined for the shutout for Redlands coming up with five saves.

Sophomore M Olivia Do attempted four shots for Chapman while sophomore GK Marissa Fehrman saved one of Redlands eight shots. Of Redlands eight shots in the match, only two were on goal.

Chapman next hosts the University of La Verne on Wednesday, Oct. 17 at 5 p.m. on Wilson Field while Redlands' next match is at home on Oct. 17 against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 7 p.m.
