Women's soccer team returns strong in depth

ORANGE, Calif.–The Chapman University women's soccer team will kick off its 2014 season on Friday in Portland, Ore. at Lewis & Clark College at 6 p.m. The Panthers will face Puget Sound who is ranked No. 14 nationally.

Entering her 11th season at the helm of the women's soccer program, head coach Courtney Calderon will have the luxury of having 21 returners, 16 of those being upper classmen. Coming off a .500 season Calderon hopes this season's team depth and experience will speak for itself as they face nationally ranked teams such as No. 14 Puget Sound and No. 18 Hardin-Simmons.

Leading the pack of returning Panthers is junior M Haley Fedden, who earned her first all-conference SCIAC selection with a solid sophomore season in which she set career-best in goals (4) and points (10). The midfielder was not only consistent, but clutch, coming up with two game-winning goals.

Freshmen F Rosie Kerstetter and M Katie Bell earned second team honors and look to be amongst the team leaders in offensive output this season. Kerstetter played 917 minutes last season, leading the team with 15 points and six goals, four of those being game-winning goals. Bell who started 17 matches as a freshman, led the team with four assists while finishing just behind Kerstetter with five goals and 14 points.

Last year's top offensive performers will be joined by a leading defender Emma Danz who has made a significant impact on the Panthers' the past 4 season appearing in 48 games and starting in 25.  Playing in front of the goal is sophomore GK Kristin Kleinow, who has appeared in 11 games over the past two seasons, recording 736 minutes in goal and a 2-0-1 record.

The Panthers will return to Orange to play their home opener vs. Hardin-Simmons (Texas) on Sept. 7 at 7 p.m.
