'Ha(y)ley Connection' strikes for game-winner over La Verne

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's soccer team broke through a scoreless tie and scored the match's lone goal in the second half as the Panthers held on to shut out visiting University of La Verne 1-0 at Wilson Field on Saturday night. Chapman (6-3 overall, 2-2 SCIAC) evened its conference mark and earned its third shutout of the season in the process.

It was the "Ha(y)ley Connection" that got the Panthers on the board in the 59th minute as sophomore F Hayley Thorfinnson netted the game-winner for Chapman. Junior M Haley Fedden served a free kick into a crowd of players in front of La Verne's goalie box. The 5-foot, 8-inch Thorfinnson utilized her height and headed the ball into the back-right corner of the goal for her second goal of the season.

The Chapman defense then withstood a flurry of Leopard shots and scoring chances with sophomore GK Kristin Kleinow making seven saves in all. La Verne out-shot the Panthers 15-4 in the contest, but couldn't find the back of the net. Kleinow has played every minute in goal for Chapman this season and improved to 6-3 overall with her third shutout of the year and lowered her goals-against average to 0.97.

The Panthers will travel to Claremont on Wednesday to face SCIAC unbeaten Pomona-Pitzer and return home on Saturday to host the other undefeated conference foe Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
