Panthers win home opener, freshman nets a brace

ORANGE, Calif. –The Chapman University women's soccer team opened up its 2016 season with a 2-1 win over UC Santa Cruz on Thursday night at Wilson Field. Rookie Rachel Lustig had a break out season-opener netting both goals for the Panthers.

Chapman's scored its first goal on a cross from freshman Elly Aronson at the 73 minute mark. The ball made it all the way through the box for the freshman Lustig to knock it in from the back post. With just a few minutes left the Panthers then earned a corner, taken by senior Andrea Zenere, and Lustig netted the ball again from the back post to lift the Panthers to a 2-0 lead.

Less than a minute later, the Banana Slugs fired back with a goal of their own by sophomore Cayce Shaw who scored off a rebound shot resulting from a leaping save by senior Kristin Kleinow.

The Panthers took 13 shots on goals in their first outing and Kleinow recorded three saves at the net.

The Panthers will host Lewis & Clark on Sunday, Sept. 2 at 11 a.m. Chapman will then travel to Texas for a match against Carroll on Saturday, Sept. 10 and then Texas-Dallas on Sunday, Sept. 11.
