Women’s soccer ties Whittier in second consecutive scoreless draw

ORANGE, Calif. – The Panthers fired off 31 shots but suffered their second straight scoreless double-overtime draw to the visiting Whittier College Poets earlier this evening. Juniors Riley Pidgeon and Anna Montemor each put five of their shots on frame.

Sophomore Jessie Roux took the first shot just over 30 seconds into the match to give the Panthers momentum. The next nine shots were all from Chapman before Whittier was able to get its first look on goal in the 23rd minute. Sophomore Joey Wescott found an opening and fired on off, forcing sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Bland to make her first of four saves on the night.

Wescott was able to get one more shot off in the 37th minute, but Bland came up solid again to keep a clean sheet. Chapman rattled off seven more shots in the final eight minutes of the first half to out-shoot the Poets 19-2.

The second half was more even as Chapman took eight shots. The back line of seniors Stephanie Fox, Taylor Scranton and Faith Holloway and freshman Shannon Coyle were solid again in the second 45 minutes of play, allowing just one shot on goal.

Chapman saw four shots in the first overtime period but were unable to get a good look on goal in the second. Whittier took just one shot in the second overtime but Bland was there to gobble it up.

Sophomores Rory Biles and Cate Combi played the full 110-minute double overtime match along with Coyle and Holloway.

The Panthers head on the road for their next three matches but return home on Wednesday, Oct. 16 to host La Verne at 4 p.m.
