Women's soccer draws with Oxy in SCIAC-opener

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's soccer team opened the 2022 SCIAC season with a 1-1 draw against visiting Occidental on Wednesday. Lily Jose scored for the Panthers to pull even with the Tigers.

Occidental struck first when Grace Denny headed in a corner kick late in the first half for a 1-0 lead. Jose, who narrowly missed a goal earlier in the match that rolled just outside the far post, evened the match after winning a 2-on-1 battle in the box.

Jose initially headed down the cross in from the far side but it deflected off a defender. Taking on two defenders, Jose won the ensuing scrum for the ball and quickly moved the ball to her left foot and swept it past the keeper to make it 1-1.

Both teams tried to push forward over the final half hour but neither could find the go-ahead goal. Maia Mills made a save with just 11 minutes left to keep the Panthers even.

Chapman outshot Oxy 11-7 and earned seven corners compared to Oxy's one.

Chapman heads to Whittier on Saturday for a 7 p.m. match to continue the conference schedule.
