Swim teams head to SCIAC Championships this week

ORANGE, Calif. – Championship season has arrived as the Chapman University swimming teams head to Splash! in La Mirada, Calif. for the 2022 SCIAC Swimming Championships. All nine schools will converge on the facility for the championship meet for the first time since February 2020.

The women's team has put together a solid season through the dual meet portion of the year and will look to keep its spot in the top-3 at the SCIAC Championships.

Freshman Meghan Kluck leads the Panthers into the championship meet as she currently holds times in the top-5 in the conference in two events. Her 100 breast time of 1:05.17 ranks third in the SCIAC – the highest ranking of any Chapman swimmer this season. She also ranks fifth in the 50 free with a season-best of 23.95.

Chapman has three swimmers ranked in the top-18 in the 50 free as Ryanne Doherty ranks 13th and Avery Hall 15th. Hall also ranks 15th in the 100 free. Riley Brownfield is Chapman's top distance swimmer and currently ranks in the top-18 of three events. She is 12th in the 200 free, 13th in the 500 free and 12th in the 1650 free. Greta Cannon has the 16th-best time in the in the conference.

Marah Kane and Inez Amer will compete for a spot in the finals of the 200 back as they rank 17th and 18th, respectively, in the SCIAC.

The Tanizaki-Hudson sisters will both compete for top-9 finishes in the 100 fly. Kiana Tanizaki-Hudson ranks seventh with her school record time of 57.64 while older sister Kealani Tanizaki-Hudson ranks 10th in the event. Kiana also ranks 12th in the 200 fly and 13th in the 200 IM. Bianca Bayer ranks just ahead of Tanizaki-Hudson in the IM.

Zach Waddell and Cole Kershner will lead the men's team into the championship. Waddell enters the meet as one of the top distance swimmers in the SCIAC. He ranks seventh in the 500 free with a season-best time of 4:39.12 and ninth in the 1650 free with a 16:17.20.

Kershner has the 12th-best time in the SCIAC in the 50 free with a 21.41 and 18th in the 100 fly with a 52.01. In the 200 back, Bryce Grover ranks 16th in the SCIAC and Brandon Leung ranks 17th.

Senior William Crewe returns to defend his 2020 SCIAC title in the 100 back. His season-best ranks 16th heading into the championship meet although his career-best would put him right near the top of the conference rankings in the event.

The meet opens with a pair of relays on Wednesday night and runs through Saturday. Finals begin at 6 p.m. on Wednesday and 5 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
