Women's doubles advances deep at Fall Regionals
CLAREMONT, Calif. – Chapman University's men's and women's tennis teams debuted with a promising showing at last weekend's Division III Fall Regionals tournament at the Bizantz Family Tennis Center, hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges. Junior Sophia Duong and senior Kelley Klebenow won the women's doubles consolation bracket, stringing together three straight wins and completing a strong weekend for the Panther women.
Freshman Rachel Fox and sophomore Andrea Hammer reached the quarterfinals of the double main draw bracket with a pair of against teams from Pomona-Pitzer and Claremont. The duo nearly didn't make it out of the first round, but fought past a tough Pomona pair with a 9-8 (2) victory in the Round of 32. Fox and Hammer then handed Claremont a decisive 8-1 win before losing to semifinalists Samantha Coyiuto and Arthi Padmanabhan from Pomona-Pitzer in the quarters.
In singles play, Duong and Hammer each reached the Round of 16 after a pair of wins in the first two rounds. Hammer eventually lost to No. 3 seed Jessica Ly from Redlands in straight sets. Unseeded Duong earned an upset win over No. 9 seed Alexandra Scotten from UC Santa Cruz in the second round before falling to No. 2 seed Andrea Madrigal from La Verne.
The men got off to a promising start in the main singles bracket, earning three first round wins courtesy of sophomore Brett Buford, junior Justin Thompson and senior Troy Akin, but all three fell in the second round. Akin and Buford advanced to the Round of 16 in the main doubles draw before losing to a duo from Claremont.
The annual event helps establish team and individual rankings for the upcoming spring season which begins in February 2014.
