Women's tennis wins one, loses one over weekend

ANAHEIM, Calif.  - Chapman University's women's tennis began a busy weekend at home with a 9-love Valentine's Day victory over Arizona Christian University on Friday at the Chapman Tennis Courts. On Saturday, the University of Redlands defeated the Panthers 6-3 in a SCIAC matchup at the Anaheim Hills Racquet Club.

Friday: Chapman 9, Arizona Christian 0

Chapman started the day off winning all three doubles matchups by scores of 8-2, 8-1 and 8-3. All three Panther doubles pairings won each of their two first matches to start the season.

Moving on to the singles, the Panthers continued their strong performance. The Panthers were led by a dominant performance by junior Rachel Fox (2-0), who won her singles match in straight sets without giving up a single point 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 2 position.

Saturday: Redlands 6, Chapman 3

The Panthers (2-1, 1-1 SCIAC) were handed their first loss of the season, at the hands of No. 11-nationally ranked SCIAC foe Redlands (1-0 overall, 1-0 SCIAC) playing its first match of the year.

Chapman sophomore Andrea Hammer and Fox teamed up to win the first doubles matchup of the day 8-5 over Redlands' senior Jessica Ly and junior Ceara Sumida. However, the Panthers would drop the next two doubles sets on the day.

In a singles matchup of both school's No.1 players, Hammer defeated Ly in straight sets, 6-4, 3-1 before Ly was forced to retire. Panthers' junior Sophia Duong brought home the team's only other singles victory, coming from behind to win 6-7, 7-6, 10-5. The Bulldogs would go on to win the remaining four singles matchups, sealing the Redlands victory.

Chapman's women's tennis team will next face off against Bates College on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Chapman Tennis Courts.
