Battle of nationally-ranked teams goes to La Verne, 5-4

ANAHEIM, Calif. - The Chapman University women's tennis team came up short on Saturday at the Anaheim Hills Racquet Club, losing to the University of La Verne by a score of 5-4 in a SCIAC matchup of two nationally-ranked teams. The loss drops Chapman to fifth place in the SCIAC standings.

No. 30 Chapman (11-7 overall, 4-4 SCIAC) was only able to scratch out two singles victories on the day. Panthers' senior Kelley Klebenow defeated La Verne's Shenelle Trujillo in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. Klebenow improved to a 12-3 season record, 5-3 in SCIAC play.

Chapman's Sophia Duong continued a strong junior season with a 6-3, 6-4 upset victory over Jeanette Losaria, who is ranked 15th in the West Region. The victory gives Duong an 18-3 season record, including 7-1 in SCIAC competition. Both Klebenow and Duong have won five straight and nine of 10 in singles matches.

Chapman took two of the afternoon's three doubles matchups against La Verne (13-3 overall, 5-1 SCIAC). The Panthers' No. 1 pairing juniors Andrea Hammer and Rachel Fox – ranked No. 5 in the West Region – took down La Verne's top duo – No. 3 in the West Region – by a score of 8-4. In the No. 3 slot, the Panther duo of Duong and Klebenow defeated their Leopard counterparts 8-2.

The Panthers head north to the Ojai Valley Tournament April 24-26 before returning to team play for the SCIAC Championships the following weekend.
