Doubles sweep boosts Chapman in upset win over Trinity

ORANGE, Calif. – The No. 32-ranked Chapman University women's tennis team scored an upset on Tuesday, defeating No. 21-ranked Trinity College 5-4 at the Chapman Tennis Courts. The Chapman women got a big lift, jumping out to a 3-0 lead after a swept in doubles competition and then won two of six in singles.

Senior Sarah McDonald earned the match-deciding victory on court five, winning in three sets over Trinity's Carolyn Zimmer and earning a shutout in the final set 6-4, 5-7, 6-0. It was McDonald's second straight win and third overall this season.

Sophomore Madeline Saunders also had a big win in singles on court four, with a straight-sets win over Ania Aliev 6-2, 6-1 and improved to 5-1 in dual matches this spring and 7-2 overall in singles play this season.

The Chapman duo of Saunders and senior Sophia Duong defeated Aliev and Vanja Babunski 8-5 on court two, pacing a sweep of doubles. Duong and Saunders have a team-leading overall record of 5-2 for doubles.

Junior Andrea Hammer and senior Rachel Fox faced Melita Ferjanic and Morgan Feldman, finishing their match with an 8-6 Panther win. Freshman Lauren Ross and junior Mady Strahl also defeated Trinity's Emily Curtis and Sarah Curtis with a final score of 8-6 for their second win of the year.

Chapman has won back-to-back matches for the first time this season and will try to make it three in a row when it faces No. 4-ranked Amherst College (Mass.) on Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Chapman Tennis Courts.
