Seniors lead women's tennis to sweep in home finale

ANAHEIM, Calif. – The No. 32-ranked Chapman University women's tennis team split a pair of SCIAC matches over the weekend, falling to the nation's No. 24-ranked University of La Verne 8-1 on Friday before shutting out Occidental College 9-0 on 'Senior Day' Saturday at Anaheim Hills Racquet Club.

Friday: La Verne 8, Chapman 1

Having dropped out of the regional rankings in the most recent poll released by the ITA on Wednesday, Panther duo senior Sophia Duong and sophomore Madeline Saunders responded with a win over regionally-ranked La Verne. Chapman's doubles team earned an 8-5 win over 13th-ranked Andrea Madrigal and Janae Chinn on court two to earn the Panthers' only point of the match. It was Duong and Saunders's first win over a regionally-ranked opponent this season and it was their 10th win on the No. 2 court.

Saturday: Chapman 9, Occidental 0

Chapman (8-9 overall, 4-3 SCIAC) earned their first shutout of the season, blanking the Tigers to move into a tie for fourth place in the SCIAC standings. Duong and Saunders improved to a team-best 12-5 overall in doubles play and the West Region's No. 8-ranked pair junior Andrea Hammer and senior Rachel Fox improved to 8-9 with an 8-2 win on court one.

It was 'Senior Day' for three Panther seniors who all won in singles play in their final home match. No. 15 regionally-ranked Fox earned a straight sets win over Oxy's Amber Gadsden 6-2, 6-0 to improve to 9-7 this season on court two. Duong, who cracked the regional rankings for the first time last week debuting at No. 24, also won in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 as Chapman's top seed. And senior Sarah McDonald won on court six without losing a game 6-0, 6-0. The Tigers managed to win just three games combined over the final four singles matches, all decided in straight sets with Chapman wins.

Chapman will travel to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps for their regular season finale on Friday, April 17 before heading to the Ojai Tournament at the end of the month and heading into SCIAC Championships May 1-3.
