Tennis teams looking ahead to Ojai, SCIAC Tournaments

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman men's and women's tennis teams dropped their regular season finales to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in 9-0 shutout losses over the weekend and now turn their attention to the 115th Annual Ojai Valley Tournament on April 23-26 before wrapping team play at the SCIAC Championships on May 1-3.

The men's double team of junior Brett Buford and sophomore Charlie Werman pushed CMS's No. 1 regionally-ranked duo of Warren Wood and Joe Dorn to a tight finish for an 8-6 loss. Buford and Werman are 11-7 overall as a duo.

In women's singles, Chapman sophomore Madeline Saunders pushed Athenas' Kyla Scott to three sets, winning the second set 6-4 but lost the others 6-3 and 10-4.

Senior Justin Thompson earned the No. 7 seed for the Ojai Valley Tournament men's Division III singles bracket. Last year, Thompson ranked No. 12 and was eliminated in the Round of 16. Panthers' freshman Justin P. Thompson is ranked No. 16 heading into the tournament.

On the women's side, senior Rachel Fox is ranked No. 14 in the women's independent colleges bracket. She and junior Andrea Hammer will also be the No. 6 seed for their doubles competition coming in with an 8-10 record this season. The two made it to the NCAA quarterfinals and earned All-America honors last season.

The men's tennis team closed the season 9-8, the best team record since 2005. The No. 5 seeded Panthers will face the Cal Lutheran University team who is the No. 4 seed in the SCIAC Tournament which begins May 1.

The women completed the season in fifth place in the conference standings and will be the No. 5 seed in the SCIAC Championships.
