Women's tennis falls twice

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's tennis team dropped a pair of matches on Sunday and Monday with a narrow loss on the Sunday. The Panthers fell 5-4 to St. Lawrence on Sunday before falling to 9-0 to Bowdoin on Monday.

Senior Andrea Hammer scored two of the Panthers points on Sunday at the top of both the singles and doubles lineups. Hammer and Madeline Saunders teamed up in No. 1 doubles to edge out an 8-6 win. However, St. Lawrence captured to two other doubles matches to go up 2-1 in the match.

Hammer won again at No. 1 singles in straight sets but couldn't counteract the three straight set wins for St. Lawrence in the Nos. 4-6 matches, which clinched the match. Saunders went on to win the No. 2 match with a 10-point tiebreak in the third set and Nicole Fouts won her second match of the year with a 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (11-9) win at No. 3.

Bowdoin didn't leave much doubt in the match in Monday, dropping only two combined doubles sets and winning all six singles matches in straight sets. Hammer pushed Joulia Likhanskaia to a tiebreak in the first but ultimately fell 7-6, 6-3.

The Panthers host Lewis & Clark on Wednesday at 2 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the men's team.
