Doubles advantage doesn't hold in loss to WashU

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's tennis team fell 6-3 to WashU on Sunday at the Lastinger Tennis Center. The Panthers took an advantage in doubles but the Bears rebounded in singles to take the match.

Two of three very competitive doubles matches went to the Panthers to start the match. Juniors Vasilisa Trofimova and Madison Ross earned the 8-5 win in the No. 3 match. WashU took the No. 2 match by the same score.

The No. 1 match went to Chapman 8-6 with sophomore Tatum Phillips and freshman Mary Williams teaming up for the victory to put the Panthers ahead 2-1 in the match.

WashU took four of the six singles matches in straight sets to clinch the comeback team win. Freshman Aliya Allyn forced a third set before falling in the No. 4 match. Phillips grabbed the Panthers lone singles point with a three-set victory. She rebounded after dropping the first set to take the second and third in a super tiebreaker 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8).

Phillips improved to 4-2 at the top of the Panthers' singles lineup while Trofimova and Ross improved to 5-1 in the No. 3 spot in the double lineup.

Chapman returns to Lastinger Tennis Center on Thursday to take NCAA D-II opponent Minnesota State Moorehead at 1 p.m.
