Women's tennis uses doubles sweep to get past CLU

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Chapman University women's tennis team rode a doubles sweep to a 5-4 road win at Cal Lutheran on Friday. The win puts the Panthers one win away from clinching the 2021 SCIAC series.

Freshman Olivia Desso clinched the win for the Panthers on the No. 5 singles court and also teamed up with junior Tatum Phillips for the 8-6 win at the top of the doubles lineup. Sophomore Aliya Allyn and junior Liza Antonova started off the doubles sweep with an 8-2 win on the No. 2 court. Senior duo Vasilisa Trofimova and Madison Ross won 8-5 at No. 3.

The Regals bounced back and captured four of the six singles matches. CLU's Caroline Groff Hinojosa quickly took the No. 3 match but Allyn won 7-5, 6-1 in the No.2 singles match and Desso won 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 5 match to clinch the team victory.

Cal Lutheran squeaked out tight wins in the remaining three matches, winning two in a third set.

The teams meet again on April 24 at 10 a.m. in Orange.
