Women's tennis takes down Division I UCI

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's tennis team took down NCAA Division I opponent UC Irvine 5-4 to open the 2022 season on Wednesday. The Panthers captured four singles points to get the team victory.

UCI opened with the advantage in doubles, but the Panthers came roaring back in singles with a pair of three-set wins in the middle of the lineup. Chapman had fallen behind 2-1 after doubles with senior Tatum Phillips and sophomore Lucy Erickson capturing the point in the No. 3 match with an 8-6 win.

Erickson went on to win 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 6 match while sophomore Olivia Desso won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 5. UCI countered with straight set victories in the No. 1 and No. 2 matches keep the one-point edge.

Phillips rebounded from an opening set loss to tie the match at 4-4 with a 4.6, 6-0, 6-2 win in the No. 4 match. Freshman Goldie La battled through a back and forth match before eventually claiming the 7-5, 5-7, 6-2 win in the No. 3 match to clinch the team win for Chapman.

Chapman's tough schedule continues on Friday as Division II Concordia visits for a 1 p.m. match.
