Unbeaten Redlands keeps Chapman winless at home

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University volleyball team dropped its third consecutive match on Tuesday, falling in four sets to visiting University of Redlands, 25-11, 25-20, 18-25, 25-20 at the Hutton Sports Center. The Panthers remained winless in two home matches this season, despite a 5-3 record away from the Hutton Center.

Revenge was not on the agenda for Chapman (5-5) in its first matchup against Redlands (9-0) since the Bulldogs knocked the Panthers out of the NCAA Division III postseason a year ago. The Bulldogs extended their winning streak to nine straight matches to begin the year.

Redlands jumped out to an early lead in Game 1, going on a 14-3 run midway through the set. The Bulldogs' Chelsea Arcaris led the way with a match-high four service aces, all coming in the first set. That turned a 6-4 Redlands lead into a 20-7 lead and the Bulldogs cruised to the victory. Redlands finished with a total of 11 aces in the match and Arcaris led all defenders with 42 digs.

Despite keeping it close in the second set, Chapman could not overcome a deficit as large as seven points (20-13) late in the game. Chapman freshman OH Mady Dahlstrom had six of her team-high 14 kills in the set.

The Panthers rallied for a win in the third after leading nearly the entire set. Redlands took its only lead of the game at 18-17, but Chapman responded with eight unanswered points to win 25-18. Junior MB Kate Ferrin contributed seven of her 14 kills in the game to lead the Panthers.

Redlands led 6-1 in the final set and never looked back. The Bulldogs' Morgan Buckner had eight kills in the game, leading Redlands to a 25-20 win. Buckner finished with a match-high 16 kills and added three block assists. Redlands controlled play at the net with seven team blocks.

Seven Chapman players tallied 10 or more digs, led by freshman OH McKenna Roice with 20. Senior S Kat Kowalski had 40 assists for the Panthers. It was the fourth match this season she has finished with 40 or more helpers.
