Ferrin named to AVCA All-America team

ORANGE, Calif. – In just her first year as an everyday volleyball player, Chapman University sophomore MB Kate Ferrin has been named to the 2010 NCAA Division III All-America Team as an honorable mention. The teams were announced by the American Volleyball Coaches Association on Tuesday.

The honor marks the third straight year Chapman has been represented on the All-America team.

It was a breakout season for Ferrin, who appeared in just two matches as a freshman in 2009. The sophomore led the team in hitting percentage (.299) and blocks (48 total, 13 solo). Her 294 kills were second most on the team to go along with 112 digs. On four occasions she totaled 15 or more kills in a match and earned double-doubles in kills and digs twice.

Ferrin becomes the fourth Panther (third middle blocker) to earn All-America honors joining alumni Linda Ly ’10 and Jill Felger ’09 who each received the honor multiple times. Becky Mondon ‘02 was the first Panther to be named to the All-America team in 1999. Ferrin is the first Panther since Felger to tally over 100 digs in a season for a middle blocker.

The sophomore helped the Panthers to a 17-11 record overall as the team narrowly missed a second straight NCAA playoff appearance.
