Successful preseason comes to an end at Cal Lu Tournament

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Chapman University volleyball team saw its preseason come to a triumphant close on Saturday as the Panthers finished the Cal Lu Fornia Tournament with a 3-1 mark. Chapman earned wins over George Fox (Ore.), Pacific (Ore.) and Grinnell (Iowa) in Thousand Oaks over the weekend to push its overall record to 6-2 in non-conference play heading into its SCIAC opener play this week.

Senior OH Ashleigh Gideon paced Chapman all weekend long with double-digit kill totals in each of the first three matches. She set a season-high with 16 kills in the Panthers' four-set win over George Fox (25-20, 25-18, 25-27, 25-20) on Friday. Sophomore MB Val Geiger added 11 kills and no errors in the match.

Gideon then put together her best match of the year so far with 15 kills, one error in 22 attempts (.636 pct.) against Pacific later that day. The three-set win (25-19, 25-13, 25-15) was Chapman's fifth in a row after winning the final three matches of the Pomona-Pitzer Tournament the previous weekend.

Chapman's winning streak came to an end on Saturday morning against West Region rival UC Santa Cruz. The Banana Slugs won in four sets (26-24, 25-17, 21-25, 25-23) as the Panthers had their worst hitting match of the season to date (.136 pct.). Once again, Gieger and Gideon led the way with 15 and 14 kills each. Junior S Corrine Ostrovsky matched her season-high with 45 assists in the loss.

Junior OH Lena Buckendorf earned 11 kills as the Panthers returned to the win column on Saturday afternoon with a three-set win over Grinnell (25-11, 25-11, 25-19). Buckendorf pulled off a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs and added a pair of service aces.

Chapman opens SCIAC competition against No. 25-ranked Occidental College at home on Friday night. The Tigers come to the Hutton Center with an overall mark of 7-1 after sweeping through the Cal Lu Fornia Tournament last weekend.
