Geiger earns AVCA Division III Player of the Week honors

ORANGE, Calif. – Sophomore MB Val Geiger has been named the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 1-7. She is the first Panther to earn the AVCA Player of the Week award after leading Chapman to a pair of conference wins and into a tie for first place in the SCIAC.

In another of Chapman's dramatic victories this season, Geiger's career-high 23 kills helped the Panthers overcome a 2-1 deficit to defeat Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in five sets at home on Friday night. The sophomore's 23 kills came with just two errors and she added a solo and assisted block in the win.

Less than 24 hours later, the Panthers swept SCIAC rival Redlands on the road on Saturday, led by Geiger's team-high 17 kills and two block assists. In two matches last week, she hit .489 with 40 kills and four blocks.

As of last week, Geiger ranked No. 11 in Division III in hitting percentage (currently .414) and she has totaled 15 or more kills in a match seven times this season. She leads Chapman with 230 kills and 32 blocks.

Chapman improved its overall record to 14-4, including an 8-1 mark in the SCIAC.
