No. 25 Panthers do quick work in doubleheader sweep

ORANGE, Calif. – The No. 25-ranked Chapman University volleyball team made quick work of its opponents on Friday, capturing a pair of wins via the three-set sweep in a day-night doubleheader against visiting UC Santa Cruz and Caltech at the Hutton Center. The Panthers needed just over an hour to dispose of UC Santa Cruz (25-17, 25-18, 25-11) in a non-conference match that began at noon. Five hours later, Chapman returned to the floor to put away Caltech (25-9, 25-10, 25-11) in just 57 minutes in a SCIAC matchup.

Chapman (20-4 overall, 12-1 SCIAC) has now earned 20 victories for the second straight season – the first time that's been done in the school's Division III history which dates back to 1994. The Panthers also extended their season-best winning streak to eight and have won 13 in a row at Hutton Center.

The Panthers avenged an early-season loss to Santa Cruz by sweeping the Banana Slugs at home. Chapman got off to a slow start in the first set with eight hitting errors, but pulled away with the final six points of the set to turn a two-point lead into a 25-17 win. The Panthers had little difficulty from there, winning the final two sets for their 11th sweep of the year.

Sophomore MB Val Geiger paced the Chapman offense with 14 kills and added three blocks, while senior MB Kate Ferrin finished with 10 kills and no errors. Senior OH Ashleigh Gideon was a kill short of a double-double with nine kills and a team-high 19 digs.

Junior OH Jenny Gibson led all players with 12 kills and a pair of service aces while Geiger added eight kills of her own. Junior S Corrine Ostrovsky tallied 33 assists in the match as she surpassed 1,000 assists for the second straight season. Last year, Ostrovsky set Chapman's single-season record with 1,231 assists. Junior libero Carleigh Mueller led all passers with 17 digs.
