Chapman gets five on All-SCIAC volleyball team

ORANGE, Calif. – In its first full season of SCIAC membership and conference play, the Chapman University women's volleyball team had five players named to the All-SCIAC volleyball team for the 2012 season, announced by the conference office on Thursday.

Senior OH Ashleigh Gideon, junior libero Carleigh Mueller and sophomore MB Val Geiger were each named to the All-SCIAC first team, while senior MB Kate Ferrin and junior S Corrine Ostrovsky earned second team honors.

Geiger and Gideon served as the Panthers' 1-2 punch in a season which saw Chapman go 22-5 overall and 14-2 in conference, while placing second in the standings. Gideon led the team with 324 kills and became the first Panther in school history to record over 300 kills and 400 digs (412) in the same season.

Meanwhile, Geiger was right behind her teammate with 321 kills and led the SCIAC (currently No. 13 in Division III) in hitting percentage (.382) to go along with a team-high 51 blocks. And the defensive specialist Mueller ranked second in the conference in digs (529) and digs per set (5.29) to round out the first team.

A two-time All-American, Ferrin earned second team honors after finishing second in the conference with a .346 hitting percentage and was second on the Panthers with 33 blocks. She is just 16 kills shy of 1,000 for her career with 244 this season. Ostrovsky also was named to the second team, currently leading the nation in assists per set with 11.7 and has over 1,100 assists for the second straight year.

The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference was established in 1915. The league is currently comprised of nine private colleges and universities in Southern California: California Institute of Technology, California Lutheran University, Chapman University, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, University of La Verne, Occidental College, Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, University of Redlands, and Whittier College. The conference recognizes outstanding athletic achievements of its student-athletes on a weekly and annual basis.
