Geiger sets school record as volleyball wins another nail-biter

ORANGE, Calif. – Less than 24 hours after setting a career-high with 26 kills against Claremont-M-S, junior MB Val Geiger recorded a school record 36 kills as the Chapman University women's volleyball team came from behind to defeat the University of Redlands Bulldogs in five sets (25-15, 24-26, 22-25, 25-14, 15-13) Saturday night at the Hutton Sports Center.

Geiger's 36 kill-effort, capped off with the deciding point in the fifth set, surpassed the previous Chapman record of 29 kills set by Jill Felger in 2007. The junior All-American posted a .438 hitting percentage in her record-setting performance, recording 15 of her kills in the last two sets to lead the Panthers to their second straight victory.

For the second straight night, Chapman controlled the first set handily before dropping the next two by close margins. With their backs against the wall, the Panthers earned a decisive 25-14 win as sophomore OH Michele Hammer clinched the fourth set with consecutive kills to keep the comeback alive.

Providing more drama for the boisterous Panther crowd, Chapman fell behind 3-1 in the fifth set before Geiger led a 5-0 charge to give the team a 6-3 lead it would not relinquish.

For Chapman, senior S Corrine Ostrovsky earned 63 assists coming just five assists shy of the school record in her seventh match this season with at least 50 assists.

The Panthers, who have won 15 of their last 16 home games dating back to 2011, have opened their 2013 home schedule with two straight wins and have placed head coach Mary Cahill just one victory shy of 400 for her career. They will return to action on Friday night as they host the visiting Caltech Beavers at 7:30 p.m.
