Season comes to an end with 11th place finish at WWPAs
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Losses to Cal State East Bay and Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday brought the Chapman University women's water polo season to a close at the Western Water Polo Association championships in Santa Clara. The Panthers entered the conference playoffs seeded No. 11 and ended up placing 11th at the event. They finish with a 9-22 record overall.
Game 2: Cal State East Bay 21, Chapman 12
For the second time in as many days, the Panthers went
into halftime trailing by just one goal, but lost control quickly
in the second half. Cal State East Bay (15-13) scored eight third
quarter goals and added seven more in the fourth quarter in what
was by far the highest-scoring game in the tournament - 33 goals
combined. Chapman kept pace in the fourth quarter scoring six goals
of its own. Five of those scores came from senior 2-meter
Sabrina Cook who finished with 10 in the game to
lead all scorers.
Game 3: Cal State San Bernardino 11, Chapman 8 (Chapman
eliminated)
The Coyotes scored on their first seven shots on goal and
led 7-1 after the first quarter, then never looked back. The
Chapman defense settled down in the final three quarters, allowing
just four goals the rest of the way. Sophomore goalie Celia
Huling made 12 saves in the final three quarters to help
keep the Panthers close, but they couldn't overcome the early
deficit. Cook led the Panthers once again with seven of their eight
goals. She finished the 2009 campaign with 129 goals - a Chapman
record.
