Struggles continue for women's water polo with three losses at WWPA's

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Over the weekend at the Western Water Polo Association Championships, the Chapman University women’s water polo team lost each of its three games, finishing last in the 10-team tournament hosted by Cal State Bakersfield.

Chapman (7-24) opened the tournament on Friday with a 15-9 loss to No. 7 seed, Sonoma State University. The Panthers never led as they fell into a 5-0 first quarter deficit and trailed 10-3 at halftime. The second half saw some better play from Chapman as they outscored Sonoma State 6-5 in the final 16 minutes of the game. Freshman utility Samantha Martin led the Panthers with three goals, just one short of her career high of four set back in February. Freshman driver Ani Marganian had one goal and five assists for the Panthers.

On Saturday, Chapman faced No. 5 seed Santa Clara University, losing 20-2. The first half stayed relatively close as the Broncos pulled out to a 2-0 lead. The Panthers then got on the board with a goal by Martin narrowing the score to 2-1 which is as close as they would be the rest of the game. Santa Clara then ran off five-straight goals to pull away. Martin added the Panthers’ only other goal of the game just before halftime making the score 7-2. Santa Clara then scored 13 unanswered in the second half to secure the win.

In the final game, the Panthers took a 1-0 lead – their only lead of the tournament – 30 seconds into the game, only to see Cal State Monterey Bay score nine-straight goals en route to the 9-2 win.

Martin scored a team-high four goals over the weekend while sophomore 2M Arielle Worthington finished with three goals (two against Sonoma State and one against Monterey Bay).

Loyola Marymount University won the WWPA Championship for the second year in a row and eighth time in the last 10 seasons.
