Offense struggles against Sonoma

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's water polo team fell to Sonoma State 7-4 on Sunday afternoon at Allred Pool. The Seawolves took an early lead and shutout the Panther offense for two full periods to earn the weekend sweep over Chapman.

The Seawolves opened up strong taking a 3-1 lead in the first period. Freshman Grace Schade scored the Panthers first and only goal of the first period at the 4:09 minute mark.

Freshman Amanda Weddle lifted Sonoma to 4-1 with a goal at the 3:48 minute mark of the second quarter.  Sophomore Lily Carton then broke away with ball with 1:24 left in the second half to extend the Seawolves lead to 5-1.

After both teams were held scores through the first five minutes of the second half, senior Kaysie Lewis extended the Seawolves lead to 6-1 in the third period. The Seawolves tacked on another goal two minutes into the fourth period to lift their lead to 7-1 and their run to 6-0.

Trailing 7-1 with five minutes left in the fourth period, the Panthers went on 3-0 run to tighten the score 7-4. However the goals by junior Emily Fong, sophomore Katie Dalgamouni and senior Kate Avery weren't enough to help the Panthers overcome a six goal deficit.

Fong led the Panthers with sixth shots on goal, while Schade recorded two assists for the Panthers.

Chapman will take its next four games on the road before returning home on Monday, March 14 for a 4 p.m. game against Macalester.
