Freshmen lead the way in first-career races at UCI Invite

IRVINE, Calif. – Over the weekend at the U.C. Irvine Invitational, four of the Chapman University cross country team's top finishers were freshmen, led by Spencer Berry for the men and Nicole Jourdain on the women's side running in the 8k and 5k, respectively.

Berry finished with a time of 27:26.9 which was the fastest time for a Chapman men's runner since Peter Silverman in 2006. Silverman that year finished with a time of 26:13 at the Stanford Invitational. In 2005, he set Chapman's 8k school record at NCAA Regionals with a time of 26:09.

On Saturday, Berry was Chapman's top runner, finishing 49th overall and ended up being just over two minutes off the pace set by Cal Baptist's Mitchell Moore who placed first at 25:19.9. Also making his Chapman debut was Chad King who finished 82nd with a time of 28:26.7 while junior Angel Flores had a time of 29:19.9. All together, seven Chapman runners placed for the men.

On the women's side, Jourdain paced the Panthers with a time of 23:42.1, but finished in 119th place. Sophomore Paulette Garcia and Mor Albalak finished within five seconds of Jourdain with times of 23:45.7 and 23:47.6, respectively.
