Familiar face leads Chapman cross country in opener

IRVINE, Calif. – Sophomore Chris Reid picked up where he left last season, pacing the Chapman University cross country team as both the men's and women's squads opened the season at the UC Irvine Invitational on Saturday morning. Freshman Cathryne Ramirez was the Panthers' top runner on the women's side.

Reid was just 10 seconds slower than his pace at the same event last year, crossing the finish line in the 8K at 28:38.5 to place 61st overall. Freshman Charles Thimesch placed 74th with a time of 29:30.6 in his collegiate debut.

For the women, Ramirez placed 70th overall out of 134 runners with a time of 20:42.1 in the 5K, more than a minute and a half ahead of the next closest Chapman runner. Another freshman Michiko Yee was the Panthers' second fastest with a time of 22:07.3 to come in 102nd place.

The Chapman men and women will travel to Riverside next Saturday to run in the UCR Invite beginning at 7 a.m.
